New Orleans City Council Votes 7-0 to Close Streets Within
VA Medical Center Footprint to Allow Construction to Begin

Through a unanimous vote, the New Orleans City Council passed an ordinance on Thursday, April 22 to allow street closures around the VA Medical Center footprint. The street closure will allow construction to begin moving forward on the $800 million, 200-bed hospital. The hospital is expected to treat 70,000 veterans and handle 500,000 outpatient visits a year.
"The VA Medical Center, together with the University Medical Center, will bring 6,000 to 8,000 well-paying jobs to New Orleans, and will provide the foundation for New Orleans' budding biosciences industry. Most importantly, however, the VA Medical Center will provide top-quality health care for Veterans across Louisiana and the Gulf Coast," says Kurt Weigle, DDD President & CEO. "Nationally recognized health care is not a luxury, it is a business attraction and retention necessity."
